Rheinhessen
This "Alte Reben" Trocken Reserve 2022 is a 50-50 blend of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay.
The Keller family began making wine in Rheinhessen, on the left bank of the Rhine River, in the village of Dalsheim, in 1789, but remained remained relatively unknown for about two centuries. Keller is arguably the most celebrated producer in the Rheinhessen, its wines justly praised by drinkers and critics alike.
Klaus-Peter Keller and his wife, Julia, are the current generation at Keller, having assumed responsibility for the winemaking in 2001, and for the estate in 2006. Keller studied enology at the University in Geisenheim and apprenticed in Burgundy, at Domaine Armand Rousseau and Domaine Hubert Lignier. Julia trained in the Pfalz, at Müller-Catoir, and in Rheingau, at Robert Weil. While the wines of the Rheinhessen region had long carried a less-than-stellar-reputation in terms of quality and character, Keller was instrumental in shifting that perception in the 1990s, working with other like-minded winemakers to produce classically dry-styled wines. While Keller’s Rieslings have earned the estate the widest acclaim, it also makes wines from a range of other varieties as well, including Weissburgunder, Chardonnay, and Spätburgunder (the German name for the the Pinot Noir variety), which are also highly coveted.
The work of the Kellers is reflected in the exceptional beauty, vibrancy, and quality of their wines, which have attracted a cult-like following. These are wines of terroir, focused on expressing site and microclimate, and soil in particular. They are incredibly delicious, intense, and unforgettable. All work in the vineyards is done by hand, and the wines undergo spontaneous fermentation.
